Russian connection operators get no frequencies to test 5G yet

MOSCOW, Dec 28 (PRIME) -- Russia’s State Radio Frequency Commission failed to decide on Thursday on the allocation of frequencies to test 5G networks because of a lack of agreement from state corporation Roscosmos and the Federal Guard Service.

“Considering the conclusions we’ve received from the Defense Ministry, the Federal Guard Service, and state corporation Roscosmos and after discussions at a meeting on December 20, an agreed position on the draft decision has not been elaborated,” Andrei Blinov, deputy director of a department at the Communications and Mass Media Ministry, said.

In order to test 5G, the bands of 3.4–3.8 GHz and 24.5–26.5 GHz were supposed to be allocated.

A Roscosmos spokesperson said that the 24.25–29.5 GHz band is used to manage manned space vehicles.

The Federal Guard Service did not agree to release the 3.4–3.8 GHz band on concerns that 5G networks could disturb satellite connection.

The International Telecommunication Union plans to approve technology for 5G at the end of 2018 and introduce the new standard by 2020.
